Maryland, Home to New Training Center

 

Selecting the 11-acre site in Bowie, MD for the construction of the National Training Center, the International Masonry Institute brings the opportunity to offer newly skilled craftsman to Maryland design and building businesses.

The two new buildings will comprise approximately 114,000 square feet and includes the 48,000 square foot, 3-story Dormitory building and the 66,000 square foot, 2-story Training Center. The new training campus, located alongside the Maryland Science and Technology Center in Prince Georges County, will serve to represent masonry craftworkers in the United States and Canada.

The $19 million project complies with U.S. Green Building standards and will stand as a LEED Certified project. Specific features of compliance include, construction waste management, pollution prevention, water efficient landscaping, fundamental commissioning of the building energy systems, recycled content, increased ventilation, and thermal comfort to name a few.

The design and construction standards were meet through a team effort of the architect, Stanley Tigerman, FAIA of Tigerman-McCurry Architects - Chicago, IL and the professional construction manager Randy Thomas, CCM of J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Inc. - Abingdon, MD.

The Training Center will include a state-of-the-art 2-story work area for mastering masonry techniques. The interior space will include a swing stage, 8 offices, classrooms, conference rooms, library and media center, IT support services center, two separate material storage areas, and on the exterior of building - 3 loading docks.

he modern 3-story Dormitory building will house approximately 105 students in the spacious 48 standard dorm rooms and the six VIP/ADA dorm rooms all complimented with personal bath/showers. In addition to dorm rooms, the building also consists of supplementary classrooms and offices, contemporary recreational rooms and exercise facilities with lockers and showers, and an airy dining/kitchen facility which opens up to an outdoor dining/patio area. To enhance area between dorm and training center, a superfluous 6' tall, 65' wide water fall was integrated on site.
