College Park, MD - University of Maryland University College (UMUC) has awarded J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Inc. the Construction Management Services contract to accommodate the university's growing technological needs. UMUC offers traditional-classroom courses—all of which are Web enhanced—throughout Maryland and the metropolitan-Washington, D.C., region as well as online courses to students in every state nationwide and many countries overseas. The university has approximately 90,000 students worldwide.
UMUC has experienced 83 percent growth in its online programs during the past five years and is now the nation's largest public university offering online courses. This year, UMUC will receive the International Council for Open and Distance Education Prize of Excellence, considered the highest international honor in distance education.
This two (2) phased Construction Management project will include demolition and additions/renovations of the occupied existing building and turn the existing office spaces into a new Electronic Data Processing Operations Center with adjacent office spaces. The data center will include installation of new computers and the migration of electrical and HVAC equipment to operate the facility.
