Facing limited space and an increased demand for its programs,
The Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc. undertook a campaign
to renovate and expand the 95 year old Georgian mansion. The
combined efforts and contributions from the State of Maryland,
Montgomery County and the private sector made this possible.
The construction project was carefully coordinated with the
Maryland Historic Trust in order to preserve the historic
core of the 1902 mansion.
The phased renovation and expansion created many new programs
and gallery spaces at Strathmore and transformed the entire
facility to meet ADA accessibility standards. The additions
provided almost 3500 square feet while 5500 square feet were
renovated. The facility features the Gudelsky Gallery Suite,
a state-of-the-art, four room gallery capable of hosting museum-quality
collections, the only one of its kind in Montgomery County.
The new conference room includes French windows and doors
and a small kitchen. The Gift Shop and Invitational Gallery
has been expanded into the new addition.
The renovated Strathmore Hall has resulted in a spirit of
unprecedented cooperation between Baltimore's major institutions,
the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Walters Art Gallery,
Maryland Institute College of Art and Montgomery County. Strathmore
Hall will be hosting major exhibits on loan from these institutions
throughout the years to come. Strathmores Executive
Director, Eliot Pfanstiehl explains this explosion of cooperation
between Strathmore Hall and Baltimore City as a match made
in heaven: Baltimore benefits from Montgomery Countys
audiences and Montgomery County citizens derive easy access
to Baltimores finest arts resources.
