| Overview: |
The Pennsylvania Railroad Station was the first major station
renovation to be completed in the Federal Railroad Administration's
$2.19 billion Northeast Corridor Improvement Project.
Renovation of the six story building was highlighted by the
restoration of three stained glass tiffany skylight domes
each measuring 25 feet in diameter. The glass was removed,
cleaned, releaded and put back in place below redesigned lighting
to show the brilliance of the glass at night.
A major task in the project was accurately recreating the
original ceramic rookwood tile covering the walls of the station's
concourse. Terrazzo, marble and mosaic floors, Sicilian marble
and glazed terra cotta walls, and doric fluted columns were
repaired or replaced. Historic lighting fixtures were restored
and, in some cases, reproduced from photographs. The project
also included relocating ticket counters and concessions areas
to accommodate passenger flow, updating the station's electrical
and mechanical systems, installing new lighting throughout,
and providing access to the handicapped.
