Project:

Babe Ruth Museum at Camden Station
- AWARD Winning Project

Overview:

J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Inc. completed the 4-story historic renovation of the 1857 train station, famous for being the station where Abraham Lincoln waited on his way to Gettysburg . Today, Camden Station, located adjacent to Oriole Park at Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium, is home to the Sports Legends at Camden Yards and the new Babe Ruth Museum.

The station sat unused since the 1980's and was in serious danger of suffering substantial structural damage and becoming unsalvageable unless the proper steps were taken to preserve its core and shell. Extensive interior renovations were performed. In deference to the historic significance of the building certain areas were “restored”. These included the “Gentlemen's Waiting Room” (where President Lincoln awaited the train to Gettysburg ), the central stairway and a portion of the lobby area. Restoration work was performed on the wooden wainscot, light fixtures, benches, brick arches and the plaster cornice.

The Sports Legends of Maryland Museum had to be open for the Orioles' “opening day” 2005 – it was!
