When the Howard Hughes Foundation decided it would fund a
premier medical research facility it was only logical that
it be located on the campus of the National Institute of Health.
To be known as the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the old
Cloisters Building was chosen to be the centerpiece for the
new facility. J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Inc. was chosen
to be the constructor.
The historic structure was renovated and refurbished inside
and out. A new matching structure was constructed a short
distance from the old building and connected with a precast
and glass lobby/reception area.
This facility had to be state-of-the-art and offer all of
the amenities to attract the "best of the best"
medical researchers. The laboratories, classrooms, offices
and residences all met this requirement. The Howard Hughes
Medical Institute is truly a world class research facility
located on a world class campus.
