Schafer understands that in many instances a parking structure's
appearance is as important as its function. The building must
fit into its environment and be aesthetically consistent with
its surroundings. At the same time, the functionality of the
facility is critical to its success. Upon entering a parking
structure, the user must quickly and easily understand the
driving and parking patterns. As the driver maneuvers through
drive aisles, ramps, and crossovers, they must, at all times,
have a sense of where they are in the garage. The parking
patron must be comfortable within the structure. The facility
should be properly lighted, traffic patterns and parking stalls
clearly marked, signage should be easily seen and understood,
sight lines should be as open as possible, and the patron
must feel confident in their personal safety.
