Project: Scott Middle School
Overview:

This 1930's era high school was expanded and converted to a 140,000 square foot, 21st century middle school. This historical building in the center of the city was abandoned and neglected for 8 years. Portions were demolished and replaced with approximately 23,000 square feet of additions and the building was completely renovated while retaining the original façade. The asbestos, lead paint, and mold that arose during the 8 years of vacancy were construction considerations that had to be addressed along with the wire lath floor slab structure, slate roofs, and wood roof framing. The project was originally designed and construction was started as a Net School with wireless connections for individually assigned student laptop computers to a school based server. Operating budget problems and administration policy changes forced mid-construction changes to a traditional hardwired data system.

Though originally engaged to provide limited CM services, in the Pennsylvania systems role of resident engineer, J. Vinton Schafer's services were expanded at the termination of the general contractor.
