Founded in 1919 as a home builder, J. Vinton Schafer &
Sons, Inc. entered the industrial and governmental construction
market in the early 40's to service the war effort. Schafer
became known as a contractor that could be relied upon --
one of honesty and integrity with pride in their product and
Remaining active in the government sector and expanding into
the institutional and industrial sector throughout the 60's,
Schafer's proven ability instilled an even greater confidence
in their clients which brought about further growth in the
70's. Extensive work was performed at the US Naval Academy,
the Maryland School for the Blind and Johns Hopkins University.
In the 80's, Schafer grew into a lead position for quality
and reliability. Such noteworthy projects as renovations of
the Baltimore Pennsylvania Station, The Walters Art Gallery
and the Cloisters Project for Howard Hughes Medical Institute
were completed. To satisfy client and market demands, Schafer
expanded its services to include design/build and pre-construction
services. Schafer's design/build projects included all services
from concept to completion. The pre-construction services
included budgeting/cost estimating, value engineering, phasing
and scheduling, all from the contractor's perspective. By
the mid-eighties Schafer was providing construction management
services to a select group of customers.
Entering the 90's, under third generation management, Schafer
focused on effectively combining their broad construction
background with their corporate attitude of cooperation and
teamwork. The result of this concerted effort allowed them
to provide a full range of construction management services.
Schafer's growing client base in this area includes major
public school systems, large community healthcare organizations,
as well as commercial and industrial accounts.
Now in the 21st century, Schafer has reaffirmed its commitment
